Taking the Next Step: Acquisition of Advanced Skills in Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery

Objectives:

On completion of the course, the participant should 1) understand the optimal operating room set-up and equipment choices for efficient and safe minimally invasive cases, 2) acquire key skill sets such as the techniques of suturing and knot tying, stapled intestinal anastomoses, and management of vascular pedicles, 3) should know the various clinical situations in which these advanced skills are applied and 4) should know specific maneuvers that avoid complications in minimally invasive surgery.

Who should attend:

Surgeons, fellows, and residents interested in performing advanced MIS cases should attend. This course is not exclusive to pediatric surgeons because the advanced skills that will be taught are common to a variety of surgical MIS applications and specialties.

Course Description:

In order to perform advanced MIS cases certain key skills are required. In this course, rather than describing the steps of various operations, the emphasis is on clearly describing and teaching advanced skills in the context of their clinical applications.

Lab Description:

Participants will practice these advanced skills in both an animate and inanimate laboratory.

Logistics:

Transportation to the Montefiore Institute will be provided from the New York Hilton and Towers.

CME Certification:

The Westchester Academy of Science is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor Continuing Medical Education for physicians. The Westchester Academy of Sciece designates this Continuing Medical Education activity for 4 credit hours for the lecture only course, and 8 credit hours for the lecture and lab course in Category 1 of the Physicians Recognition Award for the American Medical Association. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that she/he actually spent in the educational activity.
