Presented by: SIUH/SUNY Downstate Medical Center

Course Director: George Ferzli, MD, FACS

Tuesday, March 12, 2002

Lecture: 7:30 AM – 12:30 PM, Lab: 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the participant would have: 1) Reviewed inguinal anatomy; 2) Reviewed different types of laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair; 3) Reviewed different types of laparoscopic incisional/ventral hernia repair; 4) Ability to identify and implement techniques unique to Laparoscopic hernia repair; 5) Gained an understanding of different prosthetic materials and devices used to anchor, suture and staple; 6) Reviewed potential complications and how to avoid them: and 7) Watched videos and/or live surgery of various hernia repairs.

Who Should Attend:

Surgeons, residents, and fellows interested in minimally invasive surgery should attend this course. GI assistants and nurses are also welcome for the didactic portion.

Course Description:

Minimally invasive hernia repair continues to evolve as new technology is introduced, new procedures are developed and new approaches for standard procedures are created. Surgeons in practice and in training need hands-on experience to determine which new developments are relevant to them and to master new technology and techniques. This hands-on course will discuss the new developments in laparoscopic inguinal and ventral hernia repair. A sampling of the latest equipment, approaches and techniques will be available under the instruction of laparoscopic experts.

Lab Description:

Participants will review, implement and practice incisional/ventral and inguinal hernia repair on porcine animal models.

Logistics:

Casual attire for lectures. Scrubs will be provided for the lab. Transportation to the lab and lunch will be provided for lab participants. Transporation will be provided to SUNY Downstate from the New York Hilton and Towers. Shuttles will be available to take lab participants to the Ethicon lab in Somerville, NJ, and return to the NY Hilton.

CME Certification:

These activities have been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials and Standards of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). The SUNY Downstate Medical Center is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education to physicians.
