Thirty pediatric fellows will be invited to participate in this advanced animate hands-on laboratory. Letters of invitation have been mailed to Program Directors and Chiefs of Surgery, inviting them to select a fellow to attend this course. For more information about registration, please contact the Registrar. Basic laparoscopy and thoracoscopy skills are a prerequisite. The lab will involve teaching and practicing of advanced skills as components of advanced pediatric MIS cases. The operations that will be performed include a bowel anastomosis, an esophageal anastomosis, a pulmonary resection, and pyloroplasty. Key skills that are required to perform these operations will be taught and practiced. These include suturing, knot-tying, controlling vascular pedicles, anastomosing segments of intestine, mobilizing the colon, and resecting pulmonary segments. Principles of case set-up, patient and team positioning, and instrumentation will be stressed. There will be three trainees and one instructor at each animate station, and each station will be equipped with a telescope, monitor, tower, insufflator, appropriate pediatric MIS instruments, and energy sources.
