SAGES Career Development Workshop for Fellows and Jr. Faculty

January 13-14, 2012
Fort. Lauderdale, Florida

This workshop has been designed by the SAGES Research Committee in order to provide its membership with education and personalized training on obtaining the skill set required for academic success. The overarching goal of this 1.5 day program is to provide fellows, junior faculty, and chief residents with a venue for interaction with experienced faculty with a track record of successful publication, funding, and mentorship.

This seminar will allow participants to submit grants and copies of manuscripts to obtain feedback throughout the seminar. Participants will be able to take part in a "mock grant review" as well as take part in a session dedicated to writing manuscripts.  Additional interactive sessions will include negotiating and "mock interviews". Lectures will be integrated into the course to give a foundation for participants including how to  balance work and personal life, tips on writing a grant, as well as partnering with Industry.

Objectives and Concept

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will have:

  1. Developed strategies for maximizing success in an academic career
  2. An enhanced understanding of personal career direction and goals
  3. Made contacts with leaders in American academic surgery
  4. An understanding of the inner workings of an academic career path
  5. Review techniques for organizing and writing a sound research plan that accurately reflects the ideas and directions of the proposed research.

Basis for Concept:

The SAGES Research Committee has determined that there is a tremendous need to provide education in the basics of grant writing and the fundamental skills, which will assist with overall academic career development.  This seminar is directed at stimulating an increased level of research participation from within the membership as well as to improve the quality of the grant applications submitted.  The workshop is not meant to supplant the existing infrastructure for mentorship and academic career development at the participant’s home institution. This event will provide education on fundamental skills, which are ubiquitous and will assist the junior faculty member as they negotiate the process.
